Newswise — Washington D.C. (January 29, 2020) – American University President Sylvia M. Burwell announced the appointment of Steve Munson as American University’s new vice president and chief information officer (CIO). As a key member of the university’s leadership team, Munson will direct AU’s university-wide technology efforts, oversee the Office of Information Technology (OIT), and drive innovation across schools and divisions.

“Technology is key to our mission of advancing knowledge and fostering a lifetime of learning, and Steve’s leadership and experience is perfectly suited to our Changemakers strategy,” said President Burwell. “Steve’s innovative approach to leveraging technology to advance educational success, high-quality scholarship, and operational excellence will have an immediate impact on our community and help bring our comprehensive vision for American University’s future to life.”

Munson, who will assume his new role on February 24, joins AU at a time of transformation – one year into the implementation of the university’s new strategic plan. As AU’s CIO, Munson will partner with university leaders to attract and retain students and improve their learning experience, expand research and scholarship initiatives, and advance the university’s operational effectiveness.

Munson spent the previous seven years as Chief Information Officer at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. During his tenure at Marymount, Munson launched new enterprise resource planning (ERP) and learning management systems. He returns to American University after previously serving as a director of integrated technology solutions in OIT from 2010-2013.

“I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to return to American University and support the new strategic plan, which builds upon decades of success and charts an ambitious path forward,” said Munson. “I’m looking forward to collaborating across the AU community on actionable and effective solutions that advance our goals.”

Prior to working in higher education, Munson served as a technology consultant at The North Highland Company and Accenture. During his consulting tenure, Munson gained valuable experience working across a diverse range of technologies, industries, and organizations.

Munson earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Vanderbilt University.
