Rutgers Expert Available to Discuss Meghan Markle’s Challenges as a Black British Royal

New Brunswick, N.J. (Jan. 13, 2020) – Rutgers scholar Kali Nicole Gross, an expert on black women’s experience in U.S. history, is available to discuss Meghan Markle’s navigation of resistance to her presence as a black member of the British royal family.

“Recent actions undertaken by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry cannot be understood outside of the legacy of black women’s history and resistance to white supremacy. Black Britons have confronted surging racism and nativism for years. But white Brits were ill prepared for Meghan’s and Harry’s response, because they had not faced resistance shaped by an African-American woman. Black history shows us that African-American women have a unique and powerful skillset when it comes to combatting racism on behalf of their families and themselves,” Gross said.

Gross is a Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of History at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, and an expert in black women's experiences in the United States, with a specialization in the criminal justice system.
